Why does this woman think she is ugly?

Alanah has 20 years old and thinks she's ugly, which it isn't truth. She suffers from Body Dysmorphic Disorder a condition that causes people to become obsessed with perceived defects in their appearance. One in 50 people suffers from BDD, but many of us and even some doctors don't know the existence of this disorder.
"I thought it was cruel for other people to have to see my face, that it really is disgusting," says Alanah.

At the age of 14 the symptoms began to appear and she started to check repeatedly her appearance in the mirror and her make-up routine could last four hours, and even after this she often felt too anxious to leave her house, for example she started to be absent to school. Finally, her condition was identified at the Maudsley Clinic in south London and began to go at therapy sessions.

Alanah courageously decided to confront her condition participating in No Body's Perfect, on BBC Four and let a photographer make photos to her for help other people to recognise the disorder as soon as posible. The photos of Alanah taken by the BBC are now hanging in her family home.

Alanah's recovery is going well, she'is now at university studying psychology and hopes to go on to research of BDD for a PhD.

I think all the people have to love and accept themselves because we cannot change what we are and that is why we must have a very high self-esteem. I think that this disorder comes from the society's research of perfection, young people are becoming more obsessed with having always a prefect hair, the best make-up, the latest fashion clothes and the prettiest shoes.
